In recent months, I have been reading and studying about space, or the universe. My interest has been reignited from a youthful love of flight and space. Our universe is such a vast and extraordinary place. To consider that with the naked eye, at night, many of God’s wonderful galactic creations are visible, this is awe inspiring. God’s imagination and purpose for the universe is overwhelming to me at times. The unveiled Glory and power of God the Creator surrounds us and many times we underlook it.

On day four of the creation week God creates in the heavens everything we see outside of earth.

Then God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth"; and it was so. God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; {He made} the stars also. God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day. Gen. 1:14-19

He created all the stars with the earth being the focal point. There are multiple factors about our placement in the galaxy to view these great wonders. No wonder, we have been given a great ability to study and understand astronomical things. The number of space objects visible through my telescope, of minimal cost, excites me even more for the Word.

The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Psalm 19:1

As I watch the launch of the Space Shuttle, my mind can hardly grasp what that would be like. Lets leave the political and financial aspects of the space program aside for a moment. The space shuttle is a truly amazing piece of technology and invention. To see a craft leave earth’s atmosphere and be in orbit with in a matter of minutes is astonishing, and even sounds like fun. Then to return and relaunch is quite an achievement. To travel into space with the ability to view the earth, our God ordained and created place, from afar would be amazing. Yet when I see pictures of earth from the edge of our solar system it appears so minute, possibly even insignificant. That is when God’s glory is evident to me in a mighty way. That even from such a seemingly minute place we have the ability to view pictures of the center of the Whirlpool galaxy (M51) with it’s cross signature, some 31 million light-years away.

Spend a few moments some evening to take in the wonders of the heavens. From the faintest star and planets to the sun, all of the universal creation is focused for us to see His Glory.
