Based in Faith
The two most advertised complaints and misunderstandings about Biblical creation concerns Biblical chronology (the Biblically stated age of the earth—just a few thousand years, about six thousand years) and the Genesis Flood (the worldwide catastrophic event of Genesis 6). Yes, that’s right, it is the Biblical view of time (or the age of things), and the colossal nature of the Flood that causes the most concern, criticism and ridicule from the unbelieving, Bible rejecting community, and even some from within the believing camp register askance about these two important Biblical facts. That’s a scary fact!
So what’s the problem here? First of all, secular thought has no time or place for Biblical history. “Secularism” and its twin brother “rationalism” have, they believe, completely destroyed all remnants of Biblical faith. There is no justification in our overwhelming “scientific” environment for a universe that’s just a few thousand years in age. To the secularist this is simply ludicrous! And that there could have been a legitimate mountain covering Flood just 4,300 years ago is out of the question. So much for the Bible!
But let’s think for a moment…is there an observable difference in the assumptions of Creation and the assumptions of evolution? No, not really…both are based in the faith of their advocates. Neither of these philosophical models is capable of demonstration, or scientific modelling. Both are beliefs that believers know to be true, while neither have been capable of eye-witness, laboratory-style proof!
To me, it is just as unexplainably mindboggling to consider the idea that a universal explosion occurred caused by some infinitesimally small particle (smaller than an electron), which ultimately gave rise to all the stars, planets, gases and people of the universe—all without cause or intelligence. Wow, that’s a thought! Both require faith, either in an omnipotent, omniscient God, or some kind of chance mechanism that operates blindly and randomly.
As for me and my house, we will believe in the mighty God of sacred Scripture. Because I’ve witnessed His merciful grace in attendance of the fevered brow, I have observed the toxic swelling reduce in a moment of time at the mentioning of His name. I have seen the delivering power of His name in the presence of tormenting, heckling demons. I am convinced that He said what He meant to say, and that He accomplished all the things He said He did. That His Word is true, that the shedding of His precious blood did in fact accomplish total reconciliation for those who come to Him, and those who come to Him are those to whom He called to His side before the foundation of the world.
My life verse is Isaiah 40:28-31 is appropriate here: “Have you not known, have you not heard, that the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, faints not, neither is He weary. There is no searching of His understanding. He gives power to the faint, to them that have no might He increases strength. Even youth shall faint and be weary, and young men shall utterly fall, but they that wait upon the LORD renew their strength: they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint.” Oh, Lord, teach us to wait on You!
