The Life and Legacy of Dr. G. Thomas Sharp, Jr.

In the late 1960s, George Thomas Sharp, Jr., who was serving at the time as a pastor and educator in Alabama, came face to face with staggering domestic problems in the lives of his students and church members. These problems compelled him to begin a search for causes, answers, and solutions to these challenges and attacks upon the Kingdom of God. This multi-decade endeavor culminated in the formation of Creation Truth Foundation, Inc.

Born on July 30, 1942 to George, Sr. and Ruth Sharp in Columbus, IN, George Jr. and his brother Greg were raised in a faithful home, through which a generational faith was imparted. On December 14, 1963, George married the love of his life, Diane. They would eventually have four children, ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren to date.

The following years of teaching and ministry saw the Sharps come to an understanding that something extremely formidable existed deep within the culture, corrupting everything it touched. It appeared to them that the conservative evangelical community was helpless before its onslaught. Through multiple surveys and endless research, it was discovered that Bible-believing families throughout the United States were suffering the loss of 60–70% of their sons and daughters to secular thinking by the time they reached 15 years of age. Moreover, it was observed that the Christian father, the vital link in the family, intended in God’s divine design to provide headship, identity and purpose, was vanishing from his God-ordained place of leadership in both the family and the local church. In short, it became obvious that a primary target, if not the number one of Satan’s war with God, was the family – the quintessential key to everything else in society.

From 1975 to 1987, further research was undertaken while still engaging in ministry and education. In the 1980s, the Sharps moved from Alabama, helped get a school started in Syracuse, NY, taught in a Christian school in Noble, OK, then taught at Noble High School, preached for a year in Memphis, TN, and returned to teach at Bridge Creek High School in Blanchard, OK. All along the way, many steps of faith were taken to support the family. At one point, Doc sold his personal library to a church, he and his sons mowed lawns all summer to make ends meet, and Diane worked at the tag agency (for 13 years).

In the midst of this, while teaching during the week and preaching on the weekends, Doc attended classes at Oklahoma University and graduated with his masters in education in August of 1987. The very next month, he graduated from South Florida Bible College and Theological Seminary with his PhD; he had been taking correspondence courses with them while attending classes at OU, while teaching classes at school!

His doctoral thesis, the culmination of his 12 years of study, would be published in book form: Science According to Moses. The years of study convicted Doc that Darwinian evolutionism had overthrown, in the name of “science”, the dominance of the Bible (Creation in particular) as the foundation of America’s worldview. Thus, by giving apparent "scientific" sanction to a mindset governed by situational ethics, the many ramifications of Darwinism have permeated every aspect of society. Therefore, the Bible-believing public needs awakened to the reality of true Biblical faith. Basic to this renewal is a return to all realities of Biblical Creation. If the God of sacred Scripture is our Creator, then He, and He alone, can be our Savior. Hence, the imperative for a return to the foundation (Genesis 1-12) of not only Biblical truth, but also the Gospel, became overwhelmingly apparent. Accordingly, after much prayer and counseling from numerous Christian leaders and parents, and with the help of longtime mentor Edward J. Kelly, Creation Truth Foundation was incorporated back in Alabama on August 9, 1989.

In Oklahoma, the administration at Bridge Creek was very generous, allowing Doc to take off several days throughout the school year to preach and teach. However, a change in administration rescinded the generous leeway previously afforded to him. Therefore, in great faith, Doc went full-time with CTF in 1994. Not long after, Doc collaborated with Joe Taylor, who operated a fossil museum in Crosbyton, TX, to set up fossils for an event in which Doc would teach. From this came the idea of taking fossils to other places to see if doors would be opened to share Doc’s message and maybe bring in those who might never come hear a guest speaker, but might come see fossils and then stay to listen to the presentation. The trial runs were a great success, and Doc and his son Thomas began the process of acquiring fossils for the ministry. In 1998, the Mobile Museum of Earth History began touring the nation.

It should be noted that the Sharp family made many significant sacrifices for the ministry. But Diane would have you know, though she sometimes might have worried where the money would come from for the $8,000 fossil payments, Doc always slept soundly, never worrying about the Lord’s provision. And through the faithfulness of God and His people, the Lord always provided with so many generous friends of the family and ministry. Diane in conversation and Thomas at Doc's memorial listed name after name after name of those who so richly blessed them and the ministry.

In addition to all this, Doc helped publish books, videos, the Truth In Science school curriculum, led countless field trips, started museums in Eureka Springs and Dallas, and established in 2005 the Institute of Biblical Worldview Studies, which has graduated well over 100 students from its two-year Cadre program. Most of these graduates are defending God’s Word in their churches, especially in the Creation/Evolution debate. And beyond all this, Doc somehow found time to preach and teach abroad, including Russia, Mexico, Romania, Guatemala, Canada, the Philippines, and Haiti. It would be impossible to chronicle all of his endeavors that have touched thousands upon thousands around the globe.

In January of 2018, Dr. Sharp officially retired from Creation Truth Foundation. After decades of full-time teaching, preaching, and traveling, Doc and Diane would spend the next 7 years simply enjoying life together, traveling to see friends and family, all the while still edifying and encouraging so many of the faith. On February 12, 2025, Dr. George Thomas Sharp, Jr. entered into his eternal rest.

His master said unto him,
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”

One of the most important ministry focuses CTF has is the Sharp Institute for Biblical Worldview Studies (SIBWS). Dr. Sharp began this division of our ministry in 2005 because of a specific call from the Lord. As Doc would share often, the Lord challenged him. He saw that even with all of the programming and books sold in the church programs that we did year after year, and as impactful and Kingdom-building as that was, when we left there was most often no one in the local body to continue our message and teaching on Genesis 1-12 and its importance to the Gospel. The Lord directed Doc to multiply the teaching and mission of CTF in the local body. So Doc heard the call and accepted the challenge, as he always did from the Lord, and IBWS was born. Doc called a few people to join him for study that first meeting of the IBWS at a dude ranch in north Texas. I was one of those first invited to come and study, as many of you know from my personal testimony shared over the years. It was Providence that directed me to this Cadre study group and laid the foundation for me to be in the position I am today. As the four of us in that first group studied, the Lord connected, emphasized, and exhorted the importance of Genesis in our worldviews. When I left that first meeting, I was full and ready to teach and preach what the Lord had just challenged and changed in my worldview. Now, 21 years later, Doc’s original calling and direction for the IBWS continues. Over the course of these years, 146 members have completed the training. Each one has been challenged to use what they have learned wherever the Lord places them in ministry. For some it is from the pulpit, others are in vocational student ministry, and some have been called to primarily impact their own families with worldview training. We send them off with all of our outlines and presentation slides to help accomplish this task. It is quite exciting to look back and see what the Lord has done through this endeavor. Ryan and I literally might not be where we are today if we hadn’t first studied in our Cadre program. When Doc retired and passed the mantle of the presidency to me in 2018, it seemed fitting to honor his enduring call to Biblical worldview training by renaming the Institute to bear his name. So now it will forever be called the Sharp Institute for Biblical Worldview Studies. Over the course of its history we have had consistent numbers of invited members desiring to learn more of the Word of God. However, we have never had a consistent location to provide the training. It’s through the generous offerings of borrowed church facilities that we have been able to continue SIBWS without a home of its own. It is time to change that. We are in need of our own facility to house the SIBWS presently and for future expansion of this CTF ministry division. We have been pursuing different options, from renovating our present office building to the purchasing of additional space. Providence would have it that 2 doors north of our offices there is a property for sale. It is a great fit for the SIBWS Cadre program needs, and it would also provide room for our books and resources department to expand out of its present cramped space. It has a room for a training facility, a kitchen (needing renovation), dining room options, possible sleeping quarters for a Cadre member in need, 3 bathrooms and a shower, parking out back (which we have been blessed to utilize for years by permission), and the afore mentioned room for our books and resources department. We have no idea how we could ever afford such a property without the Lord’s help, as we are devoted to being as debt free as possible moving forward in this ministry. In the midst of seeking the Lord for this need to be met, He has already sent us a generous offer of a $100,000 matching gift toward the purchase of a property , even if the building up the block is not the one. Truly, our financial position has never been more blessed at any other time in our history than at present, being completely debt free. So, I share all of this to ask for your prayers as we move forward to find a solution to our need of a home for the SIBWS and it’s continued effectiveness for the Kingdom. Also lift up the matching gift offer: I must exhort you to seek the Lord if you are one to help us do what, at this moment seems impossible, to purchase property without incurring debt . The mission of CTF is accomplished month in and month out with the exceeding blessings of churches, family members, and individuals that support us. The Lord’s faithfulness through all these years is unmistakable and we look forward to seeing Him do more of the impossible. May the Lord bless, keep, and challenge you for His Kingdom!
